Walternienburg - Hohenwarte (64 km)

Slightly cloudy, the path continued through the nature reserve in idyllic river landscape. Past the castle of Dornburg, the cycle path led briefly away from the Elbe to the Pretziener Weir, a monument of German engineering of the 19th century. On field paths we reached Magdeburg and again took the time to walk around the cathedral square and Hundertwasser houses. After we changed again over the bridge on the right-sided cycle track, it again leads through an even more beautiful alluvial forest landscape to Hohenwarte.

There we have accommodation directly at the trough bridge that connects the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe-Havel Canal. It's an amazing structure. The place itself was like extinct, only storks enthroned on some wooden masts. So we walk a little on the bridge in the evening sun. Now and then a barge passes by. We end the day in the beautiful beer garden of the accommodation.

Hohenwarte - Tangermünde (64 km)

In the morning, the route leads along the Mittelland Canal to the Hohenwarthe lock, which serves to overcome the different water levels of the two canals. Via another lock, which this time equalizes the Elbe and Mittelland Canal, there was again a change of sides with the ferry at Rogätz. Quietly led the cycle path through sparse forests and past fields. Country roads brought us to Grieben, at the old Bockwind mill there was first rest. The beautiful wide landscape continued to our present destination Tangermünde.

As the name suggests, this is where the Tangier River flows into the Elbe. We quickly moved into our accommodation so that we would have plenty of time to explore the beautiful old town. Via the Elbe promenade with the well-preserved city wall we went to the castle and Schulzen's brewery to refuel. Further past St. Stephan's and the town hall, you will see many well-preserved houses, characterized by brick Gothic and half-timbering. Still until Neustädter Gate, then it's time for dinner and Kuhschwanz beer in one of the rustic pubs 🙂.
