At sea

Northern sea The second sea day off Iceland also went as usual. Several lectures bridged the time, at least for me: There was a review of Greenland and a lecture on its military use. There was a report about the construction of the so-called DEW-Line, an air surveillance system that reached from Alaska to Greenland. Today one could also see sperm whales, very interesting animals, by the way. We mostly watched documentaries on board television. Yes, and also for the son we made the sea day entertaining again and and often played foosball or Uno.

Reykjavík

Northern sea In the early morning, the glacier-covered Snefellsjökull greeted us as the first messenger of Iceland on the horizon. This shapely volcano is known to many from the novel Jule Verne's "Journey to the Center of the Earth." In it, it is the mysterious entrance to the Earth's interior. We docked in Reykjavík harbor at breakfast time. In the Europe's youngest capital with 150,000 people currently live half of the population of Iceland.

Northern sea Today a full day excursion was planned for us, to the famous Geysir Strokkur and the waterfall Gullfoss. So we went to the bus after 9 o'clock, a German tour guide, who had moved here, had interesting things about the country and its people in her repertoire. First stop was at the old Icelandic parliament site Þingvellir, then at the geothermal field with some geysers. Only the Strokkur was reliable every 3-8 min. There was also fresh salmon in the restaurant, Paul lifted again the teeth 🙂. Just as impressive were the waterfall Gullfoss in the afternoon and the visit of a village, which was exactly on a tectonic plate edge and often suffered from earthquakes.

Northern sea We were well in time and thus had the opportunity to still see sights of the capital. In the late afternoon we checked in, except the food intake did not happen much more. Was already quite exhausting today after all the laziness 🙂
